Trick of the light

07 April 2009

From Laurie Andrews
Sir, — “The effect [of sunlight illuminating the figure of Christ at Holy Trinity, Barsham, Suffolk] was rediscovered recently by the Revd John Buchanan” (News, 27 March). It depends what is meant by “recently”.

In his entry on Holy Trinity in England’s Thousand Best Churches (published 1999), Simon Jenkins notes: “The guide says that twice a year a low sun can shine a ray of light on to the figure of Christ through the west tower window, a phenomenon last detected on 24 September 1990.”
