PR advice to the Archbishop of Canterbury

02 December 2009

From Canon Roger Hill

Sir, — Your cover picture (27 November) of the Archbishop of Canterbury at the Pope’s desk suggests a number of possibilities, among them: customer begs bank manager for loan; recalcitrant sixth-former reports to headmaster; and patient hears bad news from doctor.

Why did the Archbishop’s staff not see this coming? After their disastrous failure to prevent his attending the press conference with Archbishop Nichols which both embarrassed him and put him in a poor light, it is clear that he needs better advice and people around him whose antennae are more sensitively attuned.

Perhaps (pace Andrew Brown) one of Dr Sentamu’s press corps could be spared — provided that he or she doesn’t stop Dr Williams from playing to his strength, and keep God off the agenda.
