Don’t judge the Society of St Pius X by one man

01 April 2009

From the Revd Philip Reynolds
Sir, — The Holocaust-denying views of Bishop Richard Williamson are reprehensible. Having, however, met priests and congregations of the Society of St Pius X (SSPX), and other traditionalist Roman Catholics in various parts of the world, I have found delightful, kind, and loving Christians.

Your report on Bishop Williamson and the SSPX (News, 27 March) was simplistic and insensitive: it gave the impression that SSPX was as dubious as Bishop Williamson.

I do not know the situation of St George’s, Gorton, in Manchester. Presumably, it is sad that it is no longer required by the Anglicans there. But, since it is for sale, it would be very fitting that SSPX should use it for Christian worship.
