THE SYNOD gave final approval to the Draft Vacancies in Suffragan Sees and Other Ecclesiastical Offices Measure, moved by the Archdeacon of Westmorland and Furness, the Ven. George Howe (Carlisle). The bigger picture of the Measure was the laudable intention of the Pilling report and subsequent report on Crown appointments to have more open procedures. It brought the law regarding the appointment of suffragans into line with the new arrangements for the nomination of diocesan bishops.

It was carried: Bishops 19 for, 0 against; Clergy 115 for, 0 against, with 1 recorded abstention; Laity 125 for, 2 against.

AMENDING CANON No. 28, which amends Canon B44 (Of local ecumenical projects), and the rules about the celebration of holy communion in these projects, was promulged.

THE Synod gave final approval to the Draft Crown Benefices (Parish Representatives) Measure: Bishops 20 for, 0 against; Clergy 119 for, 0 against; Laity 125 for, 1 against, with 1 recorded abstention.
