From the Revd Richard Brand
Sir, — Thank you for drawing attention to the urgent need of financial support for Launde Abbey retreat house (News, 9 April). The Church Times has recorded the recent closure of Morley House and the challenges facing other diocesan retreat houses (Features, 13 February). Your readers will also know of General Synod’s recent debate on the subject (Synod, 20 February), which unanimously supported the motion “celebrating the contribution of the diocesan retreat houses to the Retreat Movement, and to the mission of the Church and the spiritual well-being of the nation”.
Launde Abbey is faithfully serving this mission and vision. For a number of years, it has been running at a profit, but now faces a significant and urgent capital building project costing £2.6 million. We have £1.6 million, but need a further £1 million by September to secure the Abbey’s future.
The Archbishop of Canterbury has written that “Launde Abbey is one of the finest [retreat houses] we have . . . and must be preserved.” May I direct any reader wanting to support this appeal to www.savelaundeabbey.co.uk.
