Distinguished: the Revd Professor Henry Chadwick

THE Revd Professor Henry Chadwick, KBE, the distinguished theologian and historian of the Early Church, died peacefully in hospital in Oxford on Tuesday, aged 87

A former chairman of the board of Hymns Ancient & Modern, the group which includes the Church Times, Henry Chadwick was educated at Eton and Magdalene College, Cambridge, trained at Ridley Hall in Cambridge, and was ordained deacon in 1943. He was Regius Professor of Divinity at Oxford 1959-69 and at Cambridge 1979-83, Dean of Christ Church, Oxford, 1969-79, and Master of Peterhouse, Cambridge, 1987-93.

For more than 30 years, he edited the Journal of Theological Studies, and was a member of the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission 1969-81 and 1983-90. His seminal writings on church history include i(1967), Augustine (1986), and The Church in Ancient Society (2002).

His funeral will take place at Christ Church, Oxford, on Wednesday 25 June at 11 a.m. A memorial service is planned for the autumn.
