Sunday that left the C of E in confusion

30 January 2008

From the Revd John Thackray

Sir, — What was Sunday 27 January properly called? The parish in which I celebrated in the morning called it Epiphany 4 on the pew-sheet, but used the collect and readings for Epiphany 3. The parish in which I celebrated in the afternoon asked me for a BCP service, but presented me with a pew-sheet with the readings and collect for “Candlemas Sunday”. Driving home, I heard the end of Choral Evensong, in which the first collect was that of St Paul. I understand that the Roman Catholics call it the “Third Sunday in Ordinary Time”.

In the school calendar, I opted for a fresh expression of church, and used a name that I thought might appeal to teenagers, albeit for the wrong reasons: “Sexagesima”.
