Cancelling Christmas

Cancelling Christmas? The Bishop of Bolton, the Rt Revd David Gillett, has criticised the Warrington Council, in the neighbouring diocese of Liverpool, for using its Christmas lights to promote recycling. “I hope that next year the Town Council will reinstate Christmas,” he said last week.

A spokeswoman for Warrington Council responded: “This is only one banner in one street. . . Outside the town hall, which is a civic building, there is a large traditional crib.

. . . We are not apologising.

“We have had no letters about our banner, no complaints from the public, no contact from the Church of England or from any other religion. The Bishop of Bolton is in Manchester diocese, but Warrington is in the diocese of Liverpool, and we have very good relations with the diocese of Liverpool. We may have a dialogue with the Bishop of Liverpool, James Jones, over this”
