Dance at the cathedral

A performer on a float in the shape of Notre-Dame Cathedral in the carnival at Rio de Janeiro on Sunday. The carnival is now a five-day event, ending on Shrove Tuesday. But it has been described by the Christian charity Latin Link as “seedy revelry”, often resulting in fighting, fatalities, and unwanted pregnancies. The charity has organised alternative ventures to coincide with it, including street evangelism and residential camps. A Latin Link spokeswoman, Judith Stewart, said that in Recife, where she is based, many Christians attend the camp, as they are too poor to take a holiday otherwise. www.latinlink.org
