FIVE male volunteers have spent 40 days and 40 nights in a Roman Catholic
monastery for a new reality-TV documentary.
The Monastery, starting on BBC2 next week, follows the men
(pictured right, with monks from the community) as they become immersed in
monastic life at Worth Abbey in West Sussex.
All five, who range from a single advertising executive to a former prisoner
who now works as a painter and decorator, had to follow the strict Benedictine
tradition of community life.
The programme also features a 37-year-old Cambridge undergraduate studying
Buddhism who has returned to his Anglican roots.
The only married participant is a published poet and retired teacher. He
applied to the programme as he said he wanted new spiritual guidance at a later
stage of his life.
The fifth volunteer is described as “a high-earning, high-energy bachelor”
from London. The three-week series begins at 9 p.m. on Tuesday 10 May.
