A NEW Christian magazine for teenage girls, Sublime, is to be
published next month in a projected print-run of 15,000.
Edited by Stephanie Gutmann (right), the 27-year-old daughter of a
Baptist minister, Sublime is being marketed as “the perfect Christmas
present that will last the whole year and the rest of a girl’s life”.
The magazine will offer articles similar to those found in other teen
magazines, but written from a Christian angle. Contents include: De Lite:
“Delight yourself in the Lord. . .”, a Bible-text alternative to horoscopes; an
advice page; an interactive feature on bullying; and an interview with an
Australian Christian gospel singer.
There are also non-religious fashion and beauty tips, dispensed by
Christians. A back-page quiz on “How Dependable Are You?” assumes that readers
are members of church youth groups.
In the Editor’s Letter, Stephanie Gutmann describes the magazine as “God’s
answer to Christian Teenage Girls’ Prayers”.
Speaking this week, she said that Sublime had been prompted by
concern about the general standard of teenage magazines for girls, which
regularly featured sex and sometimes sorcery.
An initial donation has covered the cost of the first trial print run.
Ms Gutmann said that she hoped that this would lead to enough young people
signing up to cover the cost of second print run. “It is early stages, but our
aim is to sell 15,000 copies per month and be able to get a slot in WH Smith’s
and other major retailers, as well as selling to subscribers.”
