DAME JUDI DENCH, the actress, whose Quaker allegiance is
well known, has been made a Companion of Honour in the Queen's Birthday Honours
list, announced last Saturday. Among those to receive the highest honours are
also the Chief Rabbi, Dr Jonathan Sacks, and the Secretary
General of the Muslim Council of Britain, Iqbal Sacranie, both
Knights Bachelor.
There's an LVO for Audrey Dellow, who has recently retired
as organist of the Royal Chapel in Windsor Great Park. The chairman of the
House of Laity of the General Synod since 1995, Dr Christina Baxter
receives a CBE.
Among the OBEs are: the Revd Professor Clifford Burrows,
Director of the Centre for Power Transmission and Motion Control at the
University of Bath, and NSM of Christ Church Proprietary Chapel, Bath;
Colin Glover, chief executive of The Connection at St Martin's, which
was formed in 2003 from the London Connection and the St Martin-in-the-Fields
Social Care Unit; Martin Phelan, who formerly chaired the
Tablet Publishing Company; Nicholas Ridley, director of the
Suffolk Cathedral Millennium Appeal; and Stewart Smith, for
services to Leprosy Mission International; the Revd Canon Neil Malcolm
Clarke, former justices' chief executive for Northamptonshire.
Among the MBEs are Judy Arnold-Boakes, active in the
Anglican Church in Majorca, for services to the community (associated with Age
Concern); Louise Da-Cocodia, community worker and deputy
lieutenant for Lancashire, for services to the community in Manchester;
Anne Davis for services to the community in Norfolk, where she is a
churchwarden at Lound, and secretary of both Soroptimists International, and a
breast-cancer support group; Professor Grenville Hancox,
Professor of Music at Canterbury Christ Church University College;
David Southward, for services to the community in Beckermet, Cumbria,
where he runs the Scouts, and has supported the church and local cricket club;
the Revd Gaythorne Teague TD, formerly NSM of St Andrew's,
Harticliffe, Bristol, for services to the community in North Somerset;
Canon Jeffry Wilcox, Rector of St Leonard's, Streatham, for
his services to the community in Streatham, south London; Robert
Williams, teacher at St Michael's C of E Primary School, Highgate, for
services to education and to the community in London; and Gabrielle
Young, youth-work co-ordinator in Great Horton, West Yorkshire. She
has been a youth worker with St John's, Great Horton, for 40 years
In the diplomatic and overseas list, a Synod member since 1985,
Maryon Jägers, who has been closely involved in ecumenical
developments, receives an MBE for services to the community in the Netherlands
and to UK-Dutch relations. In the same list of MBEs, for services to the
Commonwealth community in Norway, and to UK-Norwegian relations, is
Canon Dr Trevor Park, Chaplain in Oslow with Bergen, Trondheim and
Stavanger.
In the Commonwealth list, the CMG is awarded to Bishop Neil Ellis
, of the Full Gospel Baptist Church in the Bahamas. A KBE is awarded
to the Revd Ikan Rove, a leader in the Christian Fellowship
Church, New Georgia, in the Solomon Islands, who has been the pioneer of a
project in sustainable forestry.
