GROWTH among Evangelical churches in the Greater Dublin area, largely at the
expense of the Roman Catholic Church, has been reported by new research
published on Monday.
More than two-thirds of the membership of such churches are Irish; the
remainder are from ethnic minorities, influenced by recent immigration. A
quarter of all Evangelical churches, largely represented by Baptist, Assembly
of God, and Pentecostal groups, have been started in the past ten years.
Seán Mullan, director of Evangelical Alliance Ireland, which published the
research, says that there are now 13,000 worshippers at 130 Evangelical
churches. However, membership does not reach one per cent of the city's
population.
