A confusion of coronation copes

02 November 2006

Sir, - It is likely that some readers will have been confused by the stylistic mismatch between the two photographs illustrating the obituary of Keith Murray ( Gazette, 11 November).

The very "traditional" cope and mitre worn by Archbishop Fisher at the Coronation have their own interesting origin in presents from Japanese bishops at the 1948 Lambeth Conference. Those vestments were designed and made in Japan.

Keith Murray did design the far more characteristic copes worn by the Canons of Westminster at the 1953 Coronation.
