Sliding into Pan-Protestantism

02 November 2006

From the Revd Ian R. Shackleton
Sir, — The mutuality of “eucharistic cover” between the Minister of Wesley’s Chapel, City Road, and the Rector of St Giles’s, Cripplegate ( Diary, 23 July), is hardly surprising.

The former (presumably) makes no claim to the Catholic order of priesthood within the apostolic succession, and the claim of the latter to this would be questioned by many of us within these provinces; so the question of Catholic sacraments being compromised does not arise.

Nevertheless, arrangements such as this do highlight the need of a “free” or “third” province, before what remains of the Church of England is swallowed up in a mish-mash of Pan-Protestantism.
