Russian guide

02 November 2006

THE RUSSIAN Orthodox Church has published guidelines for business leaders and trade unionists, based on the Ten Commandments.

The Code of Moral Principles and Rules for Running the Economy is an attempt to address a climate of mismanagement in Russia, which is rated one of the world’s most corrupt countries.

The code, as reported by Ecumenical News International, emphasises: “Wealth is not an end in itself. It must serve the creation of a good life for the individual and nation”; and declares that the health of the economy “directly depends on the spiritual and moral state of the human person”.

Russians are urged to show concern for the good of neighbour, society and homeland. Church leaders are to ask business leaders and state officials to endorse the code, amid reports that some company directors were looking to the Church to “mediate between business and government”.
