Russia before 1917 had a great tradition among the nobility of private collecting. But this did not involve only paintings. Among the patrons celebrated in this sumptuous and superbly illustrated book , published next week by was Princess Maria Tenisheva, who encouraged Turgenev and Anton Rubinstein among others, and who in 1900 had the mortuary chapel above built in Flenovo, and decorated with frescoes by Nikolai Roerich.
