To play Paul

20 May 2008

Above, Self-portrait as St Paul, oil on canvas, by Tai-Shan Schierenberg is in his exhibition, “Alter Ego”, at Flowers East, 82 Kingsland Road, London E2 (phone 020 7920 7777).

“The self-portraits in this exhibition are a form of narrative self-expression,” the artist says. “I have taken on the role of figures from ancient stories, and in the re-enactment of their crises and ambiguities have found reassurance in the knowledge that the trials of life have always been thus.” His other guises include those of Adam, Janus, and Diogenes.

Until 14 June.
