Courage at sea

10 January 2014

NOW in Newcastle diocese, and Vicar of St Matthew's, Dinnington, and St Cuthbert's, Brunswick Village, the Revd Mark Edwards was formerly in Carlisle diocese, where he served as a volunteer lifeboatman.

He served for five years with an independent lifeboat organisation, Duddon Inshore Rescue, where he became assistant station officer and helped in many rescues.

He has now been awarded the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal for services rendered as an emergency-service volunteer. It is not the first honour he has received: he was named in the Queen's New Year Honours in 2010, being appointed MBE for his "services to the voluntary sector in the North East".

We originally reported that Mr Edwards was appointed MBE for his service as chaplain to Northumbria Police. We apologise for the error.
