From Canon Dr N. H. Taylor
Sir, The article by Dr AlaBillings Show the terrorists that violence can never win< href="/80256fa1003e05c1/httppublicpages/a3bef188f0b22b21802571b700522135?opendocument(comment, 28 july) is disappointing for many reasons. chief among them musbe the conspicuous absence from it of the concept of justice.hizbollah, hamas, and, for that matter, the plo exist because thpalestinian people have an entirely legitimate grievance, one to which the weshas chosen to be blind for decades. israeli state terror and the american anbritish imposition of a vassal democracy in iraq are premised precisely othe presumption that violence can win.whatever merit there may be in dr billingss comparison of hizbollah tchristian millenarian groups in medieval europe (but apparently not to morrecent and contemporary groups in the united states), if the west is genuinelinterested in politics and the real world in the middle east, it can begiby recognising the results of democratic elections in the palestiniaterritories earlier this year

from canon j. g. huntersir, agree with your adversary while you are in the way, our lorcautioned his jewish contemporaries (matthew 5.5). he might do so again witgreater urgency, given the danger israel is in.we all remember the time when israel was utterly triumphant over itenemies. the indigenous palestinians were crushed, their land was occupied, anisraeli armies stood at the gates of cairo and damascus.but since then, with every attack, to which israel has responded witferocity, it has finished up weaker. it gave up sinai, then lebanon, then gazawe might ask what next the west bank? it has never before been subjected trocket attacks like those it experiences today.while israel trusts in the sword, which proved useful in driving out thbritish, but is not prepared to negotiate with the dispossessed palestinian(hamas and hizbollah), despite us military might, its tenancy of gods vineyarmay turn out to be short-lived
