Saintly rose

02 November 2006

ST RICHARD of Chichester is said to have cultivated figs in his spare time while he lived at Tarring, waiting to have his properties as Bishop of Chichester restored to him. Perhaps he would have been delighted to know that a newly created rose has just been named after him.

It made its first public appearance last week at the Chelsea Flower Show, where the Dean of Chichester, the Very Revd Nicholas Frayling, was seen introducing it to the actress Patricia Routledge. Proceeds from the sale of the rose will go to the Chichester Cathedral Restoration and Development Trust.
