Home to Cologne

02 November 2006

THE glass bowl or ciborium in front of Fr Ian Wright SSC, Anglican Chaplain of All Saints’, Cologne, is much travelled.

Some years ago, May Mills of St Mark’s, Tipton, in the Lichfield diocese, was visiting a pub with her husband, and happened to be talking about their recent visit to Cologne and its Cathedral.

A former soldier who was present said that he had been in the bombed cathedral in 1945 and had found the bowl inside a beautiful container. He said he would like to give it to May, as she was a churchgoer, for safekeeping. She later gave it to St Mark’s, where it remained for nine years.

Eventually, it came to the attention of Patricia Marsh, the deanery lay chairman, a frequent visitor to Germany, and worshipper at All Saints’, Cologne. It seemed right to everyone that the bowl should be restored to its home city, and it was recently returned there, to be blessed anew by Fr Wright.
