All stars together

02 November 2006

SWNEAZ IS not an acronym that sticks in the mind, but it stands for South West Newham Education Action Zone. It ran a very successful Citizenship Week in its primary schools in the east-London part of Chelmsford diocese.

Some 8000 children took part in a range of activities, from learning circus skills to visits to the Tower of London, the Houses of Parliament, Billingsgate fish market, and the Greater London Authority. They were encouraged to debate topics such as drugs, smoking, and the environment.

The week focused this year on "every child matters". During the last few days, the children at St Luke’s in Canning Town used the teachings of Jesus in the gospel story to discover how important they are in God’s plan. Bible stories were made vivid with drama, song, and role-play. They finished with a time of worship and reflection (below). Finally, they were all given a star biscuit that had been baked by Year Six pupils to remind them of their uniqueness and star qualities.
