Rome visit confirmed

LAMBETH PALACE confirmed yesterday that Dr Williams is to visit Pope Benedict XVI in Rome in autumn this year. The announcement was made on the 40th anniversary of Archbishop Michael Ramsey's visit to Pope Paul VI. Dr Williams was last in Rome for the funeral of Pope John Paul II in April 2005, and for the inaugural mass of Pope Benedict shortly afterwards. The two met briefly the next day.

At the same time, the Archbishop of Westminster's office reported that the Pope's diary did not permit a visit to Britain in 2007, as had been rumoured last week.
