THE Communities Secretary, John Denham, launched the first national Inter Faith Week yesterday. The week runs from 15 to 21 November, and aims to strengthen good relations at all levels.

The Jubilee Debt Campaign has chosen the occasion to launch new action on global poverty, with a particular focus on poor-country debt. The steering group has representatives from the Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and Sikh communities.

The Bishop of Guildford’s Christian-Muslim Leaders’ Forum drew attention in a statement on Wednesday to the Common Word document, sent by Islamic scholars to the leaders of Christian Churches in 2007. “Muslims and Christians together make up well over half of the world’s population. Without peace and justice between these two communities, there can be no meaningful peace in the world,” the forum says.

The Sikh broadcaster and journalist Dr Indarjit Singh will deliver the St Wilfrid Lecture at Ripon Cathedral next Thursday, the first person from another faith to do so.

The Cambridge Union is hosting a debate on Wednesday between six speakers, which include Vivian Wineman, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, and Dr Peter Cave, who chairs the Human Philosophers Group. The event is one of 30 organised by the East of England Faiths Council.

Many C of E schools will be closely involved with schools of other faiths in the week’s events. The Archbishop of Canterbury will visit the London Inter Faith Centre on Tuesday to meet students from 12 independent secondary schools, representing different traditions within the great faiths.
