Surprise gift for bells
by Nigel Burnham
PARISHIONERS at an East Yorkshire church have been stunned by the generosity of one of their number, who has donated Ł60,000 towards a new set of bells, in memory of her late husband Churchgoers at All Saints’, in the village of Nafferton, near Driffield, have spent three years trying to raise the Ł90,000 needed for the bells, and were wondering how much longer it was going to take — when Joan Shawcross’s donation arrived “completely out of the blue”. Mrs Shawcross, who has lived in the village for 35 years, said: “The church needed the money, and I had it to give — it was as simple as that. “My husband Bill was not a big church man, but he always encouraged me to go. One of my guiding lights was Francis Bacon, who said: ‘Money is like muck, not good except it be spread.’” The Priest-in-Charge of All Saints’, the Revd Jean Artley, said that she was amazed when she heard about the gift. “She’s very generous-hearted.” |
