Scripture Union to lose 25 staff

by Ed Beavan

SCRIPTURE Union, based in Bletchley, near Milton Keynes, announced this week that it is to lay off almost a quarter of its staff as part of “a major reshaping”.

A press release states that the aim is to “minimise overheads and drive resources from fixed costs into longer-term development of front-line mission through field work, publishing, and holiday and mission events”.

The chief executive, Keith Civval, said that 25 posts from the total workforce of 110 would be lost as the Union seeks to become “a more cost-effective, flexible, mission-focused organisation”. It is keen to develop more voluntary networks.

Mr Civval said that the economic downturn was partly behind the cuts, but it was not the “dominant factor”. The changes were in response to a “cumulative effect over a long period of time, which had seen a long-term decline in sales of periodicals and Bible-reading guides”. This had “been brought into focus” by the recession.

It plans to continue its face-to-face work with children, in a format that will be “increasingly managed and funded regionally”. It will also build on its commitment to digital resources, although its materials will still be available in printed format.

Mr Civval said that most of the posts would go from the headquarters in Bletchley. A “comprehensive” staff consultation is being carried out, and changes are expected to come into effect in January 2010.
