Avoid ‘fundamentalist’, says guide
by Ed Beavan
A NEW set of national guidelines aimed at enhancing relations between Christians and Muslims was launched in Bradford this week. The guidelines have been put together in recent months by a working party of the Church of England and the Deobandi Association of Muslim Scholars of Britain. They agree that mutual perceptions of their faiths are often built on ignorance and on lobal events, and ask that international relations should not be allowed to influence perceptions in the UK. “British Muslims are no more responsible collectively for such atrocities as those committed in London on 7 July 2005 than British Christians are for the excesses of Western foreign policy.” The guidelines also urge both faith groups to use moderate language when describing each other, and to avoid such pejorative labels as “fundamentalist”. |
