New Bishop of Swansea & Brecon
THE Very Revd John Davies, Dean of Brecon Cathedral, has been elected as the new Bishop of Swansea & Brecon. Dean Davies, aged 54, is a qualified solicitor, and has been Dean of Brecon since 2000.

Free-speech amendment sought
THE Bishop of Winchester, the Rt Revd Michael Scott-Joynt, is one of a number of church leaders who are supporting an amendment in the House of Lords debate next week on Clause 126 of the Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill. The clause proposes to make a new offence of inciting hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation. The amendment is calling for a free-speech clause in the Bill.

Archbishop praises Mr Hain
THE Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan, has praised the work of Peter Hain, the former Secretary of State for Wales. After Mr Hain’s resignation, Dr Morgan said that Mr Hain had been an excellent Secretary of State, and had engineered the Government of Wales Act 2006, which would give Wales powers for self-governance if a referendum is successful.

USPG queries Holy Land conference
USPG: Anglicans in World Mission has expressed concern about the proposal to locate the conservative Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) in Jerusalem in June. A statement from the trustees said that the Holy Land should not be drawn into current disputes with the Anglican Communion, but should remain a place where all Anglicans are welcome.

RCs split over care for Poles
ROMAN Catholic leaders appear to be at odds over the pastoral care for the more than two million Poles now in the UK. The Rt Revd Ryszard Karpinski, a delegate of the Polish Conference of Bishops, told ENI that Polish Catholics should look for their own priests and parishes. His comments came after Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor said in December that Polish migrants were creating a separate Church in Britain.
