| SEWING MACHINES, text books, and medical supplies were among the goods collected by the Revd Richard Tucker (above, left) and his volunteers from St Columba’s, Sutton Coldfield, to ship to Malawi. The diocese of Birmingham has had a link with three dioceses in that country for nearly 42 years. When Mr Tucker visited Malawi last year, he was struck by the need for educational supplies, particularly in primary schools.
Mr Tucker, with his volunteers, encouraged schools, businesses, and individuals to give good-quality school furniture and equipment, and asked for a donation towards their shipment. He tells me they collected about £4000.
At the same time, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, which is linked with the paediatric unit at Blantyre Hospital, in Malawi, joined the scheme, and contributed a variety of medical equipment. The business community offered some computers. The team loaded all the goods into a 40-foot container in mid-January, and it is now on its way to Malawi.
