Unity plea by ‘Global Centre’

by Pat Ashworth

LATIN-AMERICAN and Caribbean bishops have urged the Anglican Communion to remain inclusive. They fear that increasing polarisation is putting the Communion at risk.

The gathering of 21 bishops, who met in Costa Rica last month, included the Primates of Brazil, Central America, and Mexico, together with the president of Province XI, Bishop Lloyd Allen of Honduras. The group has previously objected to pressure to side with either the Global South or “the Global North”, neither of which, they say, fully accords with their views.

In both English and Spanish, they reaffirm their call for the Communion to “preserve its participative nature, diverse, ample, and inclusive”. Plurality and diversity are universal characteristics of Anglicanism, they say, and invite all who identify with that vision to work together for effective reconciliation, interdependence and unity.
