Cycle test

EARLY next September, church people of many denominations in many parts of the country will be taking to their bikes and walking shoes for sponsored rides and walks to raise money for historic churches and chapels.

Derby

The Bishop of Derby, the Rt Revd Alastair Redfern (left in picture), and his wife, Caroline, will be among them. They are already getting themselves fit and rallying support for a challenging route around Derbyshire — not natural cycling country like Suffolk, where the historic-churches sponsored cycle ride began 25 years ago — starting in the north in the Chesterfield area, and finishing in Derby.

Among the Bishop’s high-profile sponsors are Moore Large & Co, the bike distributors based in Derby. The company has pledged two specially selected bikes for the Bishop and Mrs Redfern to ride in the event on Saturday 8 September. Afterwards these will be auctioned on eBay to raise more money.

The Bishop recently dropped in on Moore Large to try out his bike. He is seen here with the sales director, Gary Mather (centre) and Tim Gibbon from the Derbyshire Building society, another sponsor.
