Disgraceful treatment of Bishop Robinson

From Mr Andy Lie
Sir, — The treatment of Bishop Gene Robinson in relation to invitations to the Lambeth Conference has been most unsavoury and disgraceful (News, 14 March). It could be likened to that oft-repeated hollow mantra in governmental and official circles: “we do not negotiate with terrorists.”

While we hear many tiresome platitudes about love, peace, and reconciliation during this season, I think we wish to see the rhetoric matched by reality. That has to start from the highest ecclesiastical leadership.

The Lambeth Conference will be much poorer if the diversity of voices in the Anglican Communion is not fully heard. I believe that lay people especially would like to see their church leaders (in this case, bishops) engage meaningfully and truthfully and in a context of openness and transparency. They should stop treating Bishop Gene like a criminal.

True to the gospel, his only “sin” is to offer himself to the service of God and the followers of Jesus.

From the Revd John P. Butler
Sir, — One option open to Bishop Gene Robinson is to go to Canterbury wearing a yellow star. Perhaps all sympathisers should do so on the Sunday when the conference opens, to show solidarity.
