Cartoon: Why you should vote

This is my cartoon from today's Church Times, made available to non-subscribers on this one occasion. I should add, before someone quizzes me via the comments, that there are of course many other good reasons to vote.

See also:

  • The rest of the election coverage in today's paper, including an article by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York.
  • A top 10 reasons to vote sheet, from Krish Kandiah's book Just Politics. This version can be reprinted for church congregations.

Except, of course, this cartoon doesn't even vaguely reflect reality. Enough mainstream-party voters feel morally obliged to vote, so much so that extremist parties never win seats.

Bring in proportional representation - then I'll vote. Till then it's a waste of time as my constituency has been Tory since 1921.

My thoughts exactly! Being anit-extremist must involve one getting of his butt and proving it.

Great stuff, Dave

So true so funny and giles Fraser apart a maybe I should start Reading and buying the church times

Peter,

People here in South Essex might beg to differ - extremist parties will be winning seats, the question is how many. In this case it is local council seats, but the possibility of them winning a seat in Parliament still isn't out of the question - see http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article7115175.ece

Too many people think that the only function of a vote is to cast a preference for a particular candidate. It is *also* a vote for the credibility of the system as a whole. (If you don't believe me, then wait for the analysis of lowest voting constituencies after the GE- "what does this say about the mess British politics has got itself into… &c &c?"

JustinLA | 04/05/2010 11:56:53

The extremist party are our local councillors. They sit on our school board of governors. They decide where our money is spent and who is worth spending it on.

I will be voting.

We were horrified (in Kent) to receive leaflets for the Even More Extremist Party. We all went out and voted - for all the good it did!

An excellent cartoon and very true. Unfortunately the apathy of the electorate does mean extremist parties gain seats -- look what happened in the Euro elections with the BNP.

Will enough people vote in the referendum to bring in proportional representation?
