General Synod debate comes too late for Morley retreat house

22/01/2009 09:00:00

Morley House, the retreat house owned by the Diocese of Derby, is to close. The announcement was made on the retreat house website: Press Release: 21st January 2009 - The Trustees have announced that Morley Retreat House is to close later this year

Retreat houses are on the agenda for the forthcoming General Synod, but the discussion comes too late, as the press release points out:

We are particularly sad that the closure of Morley comes in advance of a motion that the Dioceses of Leicester and Peterborough are bringing to General Synod (the Church of England's parliament) to highlight the plight of retreat houses generally and to look at ways in which as many of them as possible can be saved. The problem that the trustees of Morley face is that we do not have sufficient cash flow to finance our work pending the outcome of this motion.

Meanwhile, the new Love Life Live Lent has creative ideas for getting away from it all to pray, as the Telegraph points out: Church of England tells families to build 'prayer den' under the stairs. The official Church of England press release about the Lent campaign is here: Church makes Lent a family affair with launch of next ‘Love Life Live Lent’. The Love Life Live Lent site can be found at livelent.net.

"CoE tells families to build 'prayer den' under the stairs."

The opening strains of FgtH's "Two Tribes" run through my mind.
