At the Lambeth Conference

15/07/2008 18:34:00

I've now spent a full 24 hours here at the University of Kent in Canterbury in preparation for the Lambeth Conference. Apologies for not updating until now - getting internet access took a long time and I still haven't been able to make some aspects of it work correctly. This is just a quick blog entry to let you know that I'm still alive and trying to get everything done in preparation for the start of my Lambeth Conference 'cartoonist in residence' role, which begins tomorrow.

I intend to write a 'Lambeth Diary' on this blog whilst I am here, with accounts of my experience plus cartoons and photos. I will upload some special artwork shortly to mark my special Lambeth posts as being special and Lambeth-related.

I can report that the university is gradually filling up with people who are doing some sort of a job at the conference. Many of these are bishops, but most of the bishops are due to arrive tomorrow, Wednesday. Lots of people are wandering around looking lost. I arrived as early as I could to enable me to do my wandering around looking lost before most other people were here to see me.

As for my own role, a special tent (photo / more photos) appeared next to the 'Senate' building which will be my cartooning base for the next two and a half weeks. It is next door to a special stage which the USPG will be using for their aerobics. I will be drawing a cartoon each day based on the events of the conference - I'll do a drawing on paper (my normal method) for the Lambeth Conference website and then do a large version on canvas in my special cartoon tent. I have already done a number of canvasses of my existing work so that there will be something for people to look at from the very beginning.

Do come and gawp at me in my tent if you are here in Canterbury. It is likely that I will spend quite a bit of time there, especially during the afternoons. Otherwise you can follow my daily progress on this blog.

Dave, you reflect the same sense of humor that God has to have to keep this lot together. Thanks, FRN

Go well - in this difficult time, feel certain that the holy spirit will be by you as a guide.

So many difficult issues to come to terms with ... and it is most helpful for me to be part of the communication process - that a way can f hopefully will enable the delegates to find some answers through reflection and reaching out to the 'other' -

With hope and love that our communion can find ways to stay together -
