Episcopal Church developments

San Joaquin

For those whose geography is sketchy: San Joaquin is in California, just east of the San Francisco Bay area. Our story in today's paper 'San Joaquin cheers its new Bishop' gives an account of the confirmation of the Rt Revd Jerry Lamb as the Episcopalian Provisional Bishop of San Joaquin. The previous bishop, the Rt Revd John-David Schofield, was deposed for realigning the diocese with the South American Southern Cone. These links should help to explain the background to the situation.

This sequence of events has the potential to cause confusion amongst casual web surfers. There are now two websites claiming to be the Diocese of San Joaquin. The 'We're joining the Southern Cone' diocese is www.sjoaquin.net, whilst the 'You can leave if you want to, but this is still the official diocese' is www.diosanjoaquin.org. This week the official web address www.sanjoaquin.anglican.org was transferred from the former to the latter, a decision that not everyone was happy about. Simon Sarmiento, representing the Society of Archbishop Justus (who have control of the anglican.org domain) said that it was the Chancellor of the Presiding Bishop of the US Episcopal Church who had requested the change rather than the Anglican Communion Office as had been alleged.

Virginia

In Virginia a judge has ruled that a statute from the Civil War era applies to the situation between 11 breakaway congregations and the Episcopal church, both of whom were claiming ownership of millions of dollars worth of church property. The judge has ruled in favour of the congregations.
