Jim Packer: Rowan Williams should resign

26/06/2008 09:00:00

This is according to Hugh Bourne, who was at Holy Trinity Church in Eastbourne when Dr Jim Packer spoke there on Tuesday. An extract from Hugh's post:

"The question-time that followed came up with the usual questions from slightly ‘un-balanced’ folk, and a few good ones - “Dr. Packer, if you could have 5 minutes with the Archbishop of Canterbury, what would you say?”

Packer stated that Rowan Williams’ views about homosexuality (documented before becoming A of C, and not changed since) mean that he is not qualified to lead the Anglican Communion and enforce rules layed down at Lambeth in 1998. Big Jim was clear, “Rowan Williams should resign”!

For some of the background to Jim Packer's situation see our news item from 24th March: Dr Jim Packer faces inhibition and my blog post from the same day.

I have spoken to a contact at the church (I have a number) who tells me that the speech might appear on the church website. I'll post a link if and when it does.

A number of people were saying these things publicly prior to Rowan Williams' enthronement. I don't find it surprising.

How many times does it need to be said for people like Packer to hear - Lambeth doesn't make "rules".
