LICHFIELD: Medieval mystery

HOW did this 13th-century seal, showing the Virgin Mary with Jesus on her knee, find its way from Stone, in Lichfield diocese, to a field in Cobham in Surrey? It measures 5cm × 7cm, is cast from copper alloy, and is very well preserved.
It bears an inscription: +S’ECCE SCE MARIE ET SCI W(V)FLADI MARTIRIS DE STANIS, which translates as: “the Seal of the Church of St Mary and Saint Wulfade, Martyr of Stone”, and has been formally identified by the British Museum as ...
