Joining God’s pilgrim people

PILGRIMAGE can be hard to explain. At the end of January, I accompanied the Archbishop of Canterbury on pilgrimage to the Holy Land, along with a number of other people.
Before I went, I found myself — entirely justifiably — the subject of endless teasing, along the lines of: “Why go on holiday in January — most people wait until the sun comes out?” or “When are you going on holi . . . oh, sorry, pilgrimage?”
The more I protested, the more ridiculous I sounded; so ...
