With the Olympics poised to start, who is going to look after
the spiritual needs of the thousands of athletes, volunteers, and
media personnel? A volunteer Olympic chaplain, Andy
Walton, reports
ON A freezing cold February morning, at the crack of dawn, I was
awoken by my alarm. Having made my way to Wembley Arena, I was soon
standing in the snow, in a queue with thousands of others.
It was an inauspicious beginning to my involvement in the
Olympics, but, before long, the atmosphere was building inside the
arena itself. This was the first training session for Olympic
"Gamesmakers" (volunteers, to you and me). Nearly a quarter of a
million applied to be Gamesmakers, ...
