IN AN authoritative survey in the late 1970s, more than 1000 Americans born between 1940 and 1952 were asked how they felt about 155 public personalities. Only three per cent of the respondents had not heard of the Reverend Sun Myung Moon, and no other individual (not even Idi Amin or Charles Manson) elicited less admiration (Woodstock Census, Viking, 1979).
