Echoes of Powell

From Miss Vasantha Gnanadoss
Sir, — Frank Field (Letters, 7 November) rejects the parallel drawn by Bishop Peter Selby between statements by members of the Balanced Migration group and those of Enoch Powell. Balanced Migration rejects the parallel on the grounds that there are minority-ethnic British citizens who support calls for tougher restrictions on migration. But there is a failure of logic here.

It is the suggestion that immigration will result in violence which is an unmistakable echo of Powell; and the ethnicity of those supporting proposals from Balanced Migration makes absolutely no difference to that. Sadly for the Church of England, Lord Carey is one of the members of the Balanced Migration group who have raised this spectre of violence.
