Warnings over sham weddings

FOREIGNERS are using a loophole in the marriage laws as they apply for church weddings to gain the right of abode in the UK, bishops and others have warned.
A steep rise in the number of applications for bishops’ common licences is attributed to the fact that these fall outside new controls introduced under the Asylum and Immigration (Treatment of Claimants, etc.) Act 2004, sometimes referred to as the Section 19 regime.
