Warnings over sham weddings

FOREIGNERS are using a loophole in the marriage laws as they apply for church weddings to gain the right of abode in the UK, bishops and others have warned.

A steep rise in the number of applications for bishops’ common licences is attributed to the fact that these fall outside new controls intro­duced under the Asy­lum and Immigration (Treat­ment of Claimants, etc.) Act 2004, some­times referred to as the Section 19 regime.
