At a requiem mass, should there be the normal range of biddings in the intercessions, or should these be confined to the departed (and, say, those who mourn)?

Much depends on the occasion and circumstances of a requiem mass. It might be wise to distinguish between a funeral requiem (“The Funeral Service within a Celebration of Holy Communion”, as Common Worship describes it) and those “general” requiem masses that are frequently arranged to remember “all past worshippers and benefactors” of a congregation.

At funerals, the “intention” of the mass will obviously be distinctly personal — focused on the departed person and the needs of the immediate family mourners. For pastoral reasons, therefore, it does indeed seem preferable to forgo the normal biddings, and to limit them in the way the questioner suggests. For this purpose the “Prayers” in Common Worship: Pastoral Services (page 264), suitably adapted if necessary, are ideal.

At other requiems, there is no reason why the range of intercessory prayer should in any way be limited, and there is much to favour a wide range of topics that include the needs of the living and the departed, as the Church in her liturgy rejoices in the communion of saints and draws everything and everyone into the Paschal mystery.

I recall a sung Lord’s Prayer used at Billy Graham’s UK crusades in the 1950s. Does anyone know how I can get the sheet music?

The version sung at the Billy Graham crusades was composed by Albert Hay Malotte. He was born on 19 May 1895 in Philadelphia and died in Los Angeles on 16 November 1964. The four-part arrangement by Carl Deis used in the Crusades was originally published by G. Schirmer Inc. in the USA, and is available in the UK from Chappell (020 7432 4400).

An anonymous correspondent also sent a copy of “The Lord’s Prayer” in four-part harmony by “Joseph Lees, Handel House, Oldham”, with a handwritten note: “As used at the Billy Graham Crusades of 1950s and 1960s and at the ‘Croydon for Christ’ Crusade.” Editor

Your questions

Our PCC is about to appoint an organist and choirmaster. We have heard that there is a new form of the standard contract that takes into account recent developments in the law. Does anyone know where we can obtain a copy of this new contract, please? R. H.
