Dr Tutu reports on Gaza killings

THE former Archbishop of Cape Town, Dr Desmond Tutu, has called for an impartial inquiry into the killing of 18 Palestinians in a single family by Israeli artillery in Gaza two years ago. Dr Tutu was presenting his report to the UN Human Rights Council, after a visit to Beit Hanoun to investigate the incident.

At a World Council of Churches conference in Switzerland last week on “Promised Land”, scholars warned that the Bible “must not be used to justify oppression or supply simplistic commentary on contemporary events”.

Turkey told to give back orphanage

THE United States Commission on International Religious Freedom has called for the Turkish government to return an orphanage on the island of Buyukada, which it took from the Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarchate in 1997. The call follows a ruling earlier this year by the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg for the orphan­age to be returned or paid for.
