Students happiest in Lincoln
STUDENTS at Bishop Grosseteste Church of England University College, Lincoln, are officially among the happiest in the country, writes Margaret Holness. The university college was among the top ten in terms of student satisfaction ratings, according to the National Student Survey. It scored 92 per cent, putting it in equal seventh place with Birkbeck College, University of London, Oxford University, and Loughborough University. The annual survey, covering around 150 universities and colleges, draws on the opinions of 188,000 students.

John Bosco Nyombi
THE Bishop of Portsmouth, Dr Kenneth Stevenson, has criticised the Home Office’s “unjust and uncaring” treatment of John Bosco Nyombi (left), a gay asylum-seeker from Uganda, who has been living and worshipping in his diocese for the past five years. Mr Bosco was arrested by the police a fortnight ago, and was due to be deported to Uganda last Sunday morning; but he refused to board his flight at Gatwick airport.

Bishop Stevenson said he was “shocked and ashamed” by the treatment of Mr Bosco, who had been forced to sleep in a room with eight other people, furnished with no beds but just plastic chairs, while he was not given access to a change of clothes or toiletries. “It’s not just the decision that he should go back that I contest, but the way he has been treated, which has been an absolutely appalling way to treat a human being in this country.” Mr Bosco had been given only four days to appeal against his deportation, following an “extraordinary 26-week delay” by the Home Office. He now faces an uncertain future, and is being detained at Tinsley House removal centre near Gatwick.
