Waste of energy a ‘sin’
by Ed Beavan
THE Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew I, has said that “unchecked consumption of energy” is “tantamount to sin”. In a letter sent to churches in connection with a day of prayer for God’s creation, held on Monday, the Orthodox leader, well known for his environmental campaigning, wrote that it was “the poorest and most vulnerable members of the human race . . . [who were] being affected by environmental problems which they did not create”. He wrote: “An increasing number of people understand that the irrational use of natural resources and the unchecked consumption of energy contribute to the reality of climate change, with consequences on the life and survival of humanity created in the image of God, and is therefore tantamount to sin.” See the Creation Time supplement |
