NOT FOR the first time, Paris took us by surprise on 15 August by the way it literally shuts up shop — all shops — for the Feast of the Assumption. The parish of Stratfield Mortimer in the diocese of Oxford regularly goes on pilgrimage to Lourdes to celebrate the festival.

With the blessing of both their Bishops, and led by their Vicar, the Revd Paul Chaplin, together with the Revd Juliet Straw and the Revd Alan Barnes, they joined thousands of other pilgrims for “five intense days”. An international eucharist was celebrated outdoors. The Cardinal Archbishop of Paris preached on hope.
