LEAGUE TABLES based on this month’s GCSE and A-level results showed Church of England schools performing well. Although nationally only one in 20 secondary schools is Anglican, ten C of E comprehensives were among the top 50 at GCSE.

They were King’s School, Peterborough; St Aidan’s, Harrogate; Ranelagh School, Bracknell; Lady Margaret School, South-West London; Bishop Stopford, Kettering; St Marylebone Girls’ School, Westminster; Crompton House, Oldham; Blue Coat, Oldham; Canon Slade, Bolton; and Grey Coat Hospital, Westminster. Wilson’s School, Sutton, was among the top 20 selective schools.

At A-level, Wilson’s was also one of the ten leading grammars, with William Farr School, Lincoln; Canon Slade; and Oldham Blue Coat. The joint CE/RC St Aidan’s and St John Fisher was again among the top 50 comprehensives.

Nick McKemey, the Church of England’s head of school improvement, said that the results showed the commitment of Anglican schools to raising standards for all children. “At least one of the schools listed has a high proportion of children who come from very disadvantaged backgrounds.”

Information from the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) suggests that several C of E comprehensives are among the fastest-improving schools in the country, said Mr McKemey.
